John Ruskin had a great passion for the ‘doom and gloom’ of mountain scenery. Stott’s moody river of ice carving through the dark slopes of Jungfrau was undoubtedly influenced by Ruskin’s encouragement for artists of the time to visit Switzerland. Advertisements
